SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
A POLICY FOR SAWTRY METHODIST CHURCH
As the people of Sawtry Methodist Church we are concerned with the wholeness
of each individual within God's purpose for everyone. We seek to safeguard
all members of the community within our Church. It is the responsibility of
the whole Church community to guard against the physical, sexual or emotional
abuse of children and young people.
In order to achieve an environment where everyone may be safeguarded, it is
essential to plan our Church life and activities to minimise situations where
abuse might occur.
A. Good Practice
-
As far as possible, an adult should not be left alone with a child or
young person where there is little or no likelihood of the activity being
observed. If necessary, work with a door open or share a room with another
group. Where this is not possible e.g. the creche, supportive drop-in visits
should be arranged.
-
Where a young peoples group is meeting within the church building, ensure
that uninvited people are not free to wander in or out of the building.
-
If children need to go out of the immediate vision of a helper e.g. to
the toilet, ensure that they do not go alone. Be aware of their absence and
return.
-
Always have at least two adults present with a group, particularly when
it is the only activity taking place on Church premises.
-
Never meet with a group or individuals off the premises unless at least
two adults are present.
-
If transporting children or young people, arrange to have more than one
passenger in the vehicle.
-
Whatever the activity, leaders must be aware of the number and names of
children with them for fire and other safety reasons.
-
Each group must have its own policy on the collection of children.
B. Appointment of Workers
It is essential that all new workers with
children and young people within the Church are appointed after proper
procedures have been fulfilled regarding application details, references
(where possible), probationary period (normally 12 months) and training.
They should also be given a simple job description, a copy of the Church's
policy document on Safeguarding Children and Young People, and support in
their work.
All workers with children and young people should have an up to date job
description (copies of which to be held by the worker and secretary of the
Church Council) and be encouraged to take advantage of any further training
available to help them in their work.
C. Insurance
Non Church groups must check that they are adequately covered by their own
insurers.
D. Reporting Abuse
All children should feel safe at Sawtry Methodist
Church, but it is essential that there are procedures in place for a child
to report any abuse they have experienced. Children should be directed to
a named person whom they can trust if they report an abuse. This person
must report any abuse, regardless of the perpetrator, to the relevant
authorities. The Childline number must be prominently displayed.
People within the Church generally provide the necessary safe and loving
environment where activities can take place with enjoyment. It is up to
everyone to ensure that this remains so.
